Standard offset

Standard offset cabinets, often called 3/8-inch offset by other manufacturers, feature doors with a lipped edge. The lipped edges have a “rabbet” on the rear of the profile, which leaves a 3/8-inch exposed section with half of the 3/4-inch door thickness recessed into the cabinet frame. Each door covers 3/8 of an inch all around the cabinet frame opening. As a result, the doors and drawers are 1/2 an inch higher and wider than the frame opening. These cabinets use 1 ½-inch framing widths throughout.

Some specifications include:

  • Base depth: 24 inches for a base, or 21 inches for a vanity
  • Wall door height: The height minus 2 1/2 inches
  • Drawer head height: 5 1/2 inches
  • Base height: 34 1/2 inches for a base, or 31 1/2 inches for a vanity
  • Base door height: The base height minus 13 inches

Marginal overlay

Marginal overlay cabinets have their doors and drawers completely on top of the face frame with a 3/4-inch visible thickness. The doors cover 1/2 an inch all around the cabinet frame openings. Both the doors and drawer fronts are 1 inch higher and wider than the frame openings. By default, this cabinet style uses 1 1/2-inch-wide framing.

The dimensions are as follows:

  • Base depth: 24 inches for a base, or 21 inches for a vanity
  • Wall door height: The height minus 2 inches
  • Drawer head height: 6 inches
  • Base height: 34 1/2 inches for a base, or 31 1/2 inches for a vanity
  • Base door height: The base height minus 12 1/2 inches

Full Overlay

Similar to marginal overlays, full overlay cabinets have their doors and drawers completely on top of the frame. The door and drawer sizes aren’t based on the cabinet openings — these sizes are carefully measured to provide “reveals” all around the fronts with an entire edge profile and a ¾-inch thickness on display. The tops of the walls and base cabinets feature a 1/4-inch reveal. There are no reveals on the bottom.

All of these cabinets have a 1/8-inch reveal at the left and right edges. When the cabinets are butted together, they maintain the appearance of 1/4-inch reveals. Certain center stiles on multi-cabinet doors are 3 inches wide. Otherwise, this cabinet style uses 1 1/2-inch-wide framing throughout.

See the full overlay details:

  • Wall door height: The height minus 1/4-inch
  • Drawer head height: 6 1/2 inches
  • Base height: 34 1/2 inches for a base, or 31 1/2 inches for a vanity
  • Base door height: The base height minus 11 inches
  • Base depth: 24 inches for a base, or 21 inches for a vanity

Inset — Flush or Beaded

Inset cabinet doors and drawers are flush with the inside of the face frame. As a result, the doors’ and drawers’ edge thicknesses aren’t visible.

We offer two inset styles — flush or beaded. The flush inset cabinets have flat, edged frames like our other styles.

Any beaded inset cabinets with doors or drawers and 1 1/4-inch framing throughout the construction will have a 1/4-inch bead applied to the inner edge of the openings. Their center, cross pieces measure 1 3/4 inches, and the outer pieces measure 1 1/2 inches wide.

We use these measurements:

  • Wall door height: The height minus 3 3/16-inches
  • Drawer head height: 4 3/16 inches for slab drawers, or 5 13/16 inches for five-piece drawers
  • Base height: 34 1/2 inches for a base, or 31 1/2 inches for a vanity
  • Base door height: The base height minus 13 3/16 inches for a one-piece drawer or 14 3/16 inches for a five-piece drawer
  • Base depth: 24 inches for a base, or 21 inches for a vanity

Framed Cabinet Boxes

Our framed cabinetry boxes feature mortise-and-tenon constructions with natural birch interiors, which you can upgrade for an additional charge. The measurements include:

  • 3/4-inch solid wood face frames
  • 3/4-inch thick plywood sides, tops and bottoms
  • 1/2-inch-thick plywood backs for the wall cabinets
  • 1/8-inch plywood curved backs on most corner base cabinets or cabinets containing Lazy Susans
  • 3/4-inch PBC core shelves

We assemble the face frames, tops, bottoms, backs, and end panels with tongue-and-groove techniques. The shelves are adjustable with peg-in-hole linebore systems.

Drawer Boxes

Our standard drawer boxes feature:

  • 5/8-inch thick solid maple stock
  • 1/4-inch bottoms dadoed into the sides
  • BLUM full-extension, soft-close undermounts

If a specialized drawer box order exceeds the available tolerances or sizes of our maple stock, we may substitute the material with birch.

Freqently Asked Questions About Framed Cabinetry

Framed cabinetry features a 3/4-inch solid wood face frame attached to the cabinet box, whereas frameless cabinetry has no frame and relies on the cabinet sides for structure. Adelphi’s framed cabinets use mortise-and-tenon construction with 3/4-inch solid wood frames, plywood sides and tops, and feature four different overlay styles (Standard Offset, Marginal Overlay, Full Overlay, and Inset). Frameless cabinets provide more interior space, while framed cabinets offer a more traditional look with frame visibility depending on the overlay style chosen.

Adelphi offers four face frame types: (1) Standard Offset – features a 3/8-inch exposed section with doors recessed into the frame, (2) Marginal Overlay – doors completely on top of frame with 1/2-inch coverage around openings, (3) Full Overlay – doors and drawers completely covering the frame with 1/4-inch reveals at top and sides, and (4) Inset (Flush or Beaded) – doors and drawers flush with the inside of the frame, either with a flat edge or with a decorative 1/4-inch bead applied to openings.

Adelphi framed cabinets use 3/4-inch solid wood face frames with mortise-and-tenon construction, 3/4-inch thick plywood sides, tops, and bottoms, 1/2-inch plywood backs for wall cabinets, and 1/8-inch curved plywood backs for corner base cabinets. Interior shelves are 3/4-inch PBC core (particle board core), and the interior is naturally finished birch, which can be upgraded for an additional charge. Drawer boxes are made from 5/8-inch thick solid maple stock with 1/4-inch bottoms.

Adelphi offers over 70 colors in standard stain or paint libraries, plus any color from Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore. Custom color matching is available for previous orders. Beyond standard finishes, specialized treatments are available including glazed finishes, highlighted finishes, and distressed finishes for a more customized appearance.

Framed cabinetry drawer boxes are constructed from 5/8-inch thick solid maple stock with 1/4-inch bottoms that are dadoed into the sides. All drawers feature BLUM full-extension, soft-close undermounts for smooth operation. Birch may be substituted for maple in specialized drawer box orders if certain sizes or tolerances exceed available specifications.

Framed cabinetry features adjustable shelves with a peg-in-hole linebore system, allowing you to customize shelf height and positioning to meet your specific storage needs. Shelves are 3/4-inch with a particle board core.

Standard Offset features a 3/8-inch exposed section of the face frame around door openings. Half of the 3/4-inch door thickness is recessed into the cabinet frame, while the other half covers the frame opening. Doors and drawers are 1/2-inch higher and wider than the frame opening. Standard dimensions include base depth of 24 inches (21 inches for vanities), base height of 34 1/2 inches (31 1/2 inches for vanities), and 1 1/2-inch framing widths throughout.

Marginal Overlay has doors and drawers completely on top of the face frame with 1/2-inch coverage around cabinet openings, covering 1 inch total per dimension more than the frame openings. Full Overlay also has doors and drawers completely on top but is sized based on ‘reveals’ rather than cabinet openings, featuring 1/4-inch reveals at the top and sides for a more seamless, modern appearance. Full Overlay provides a cleaner, more contemporary look with more uniform spacing.

Inset doors and drawers sit flush with the inside of the face frame, with no edge thickness visible. Two styles are available: Flush Inset features flat, edged frames with 1 1/2-inch framing widths, while Beaded Inset has a 1/4-inch bead applied to the inner edge of openings with 1 1/4-inch framing throughout. Inset cabinetry creates a sophisticated, traditional appearance and is available with slab or five-piece drawer styles.
